UX/UI-Design - Kaffjes

Cafe App Prototype

Project name
Kaffjes – Cafe app

Type of work
School project/UX-Design

Duration
05.04.2020 – 21.04.2020

Grade
A

Role
UX/UI Designer

Brief
Through this school project, I was tasked with creating an interactive cafe menu prototype based on another student’s concept and design system. That meant having a brief with the student and understanding their vision and than realizing it through an app.

Problem
How can I create a cafe menu that showcases my skills and talents in UX/UI design as well as making sure that I understand the clients wishes and vision for their cafe?

Goals
Create a functional cafe menu that the client will be satisfied with as well as going the extra mile and showing my understandig of UX/UI design.

My Role
In this assignment I was given the responsibility of implementing an existing design system, therefore my role was that of a UX/UI designer, where as I did not have any responsibility for the creation of the design system elements such as logo, colour pallet, and more.

The vision for the cafe
When sitting down and talking with the client about their vision for the cafe he mentioned the following: “The thing about Kaffjes is that I want the café to be a meeting place that promotes face-to-face interaction.
Kaffjes is about “sharing the moment”. This message will be reinforced in
the cafe by guests being able to take Polaroid photos in the cafe and hang
them on a separate photo wall. The goal is to make Kaffjes the perfect place to meet others. For example, if you are going to meet a friend you have not seen for a long time, Kaffjes should be the obvious choice. To visualize this
in the design, the identity must be visible, energetic and outgoing without feeling intrusive.”

Designing and Prototyping
In this project it was my first time being exposed to wireframing and the UX/UI – design process. I worked step by step from low to high fidelity wireframes and to the final prototype. As I was responsible for implementing another student design there were limitations to what I could change, I still felt that I developed a good functional prototype that used the design elements well.

Demonstration Video
In addition to the prototype and mock-ups,  I wanted to show the interactions in the prototype. With that in mind, I made a demonstration video that goes through the app and show cases the possible user experience.

The Vision for The Cafe

When sitting down and talking with the client about their vision for the cafe this is a little of what he had to say. “The goal is to make Kaffjes the perfect place to meet others. For example, if you are going to meet a friend you have not seen for a long time, or want to get a coffe for some one you care about. Kaffjes should be the obvious choice. Therefor to visualize this in the design, the identity must be visible, energetic and outgoing without feeling intrusive.”
