Role
Sole Designer

Brief
Through a school project, I was given the task to create a concept that solves a real problem. The solution was to be presented through an interactive mobile app prototype developed with the end-users in mind, in addition to a promotional video. The assignments focus was to teach us the skills needed to plan and develop a digital prototype through the process of user-centered design, with attention to principles of universal design.

Problem
Despite the existence of several book tracking resources users often find that they either do not have time or do not understand how to easily log their reading activity. Leaving them unsure about both what books they started and where they left off.

Goals
Provide users with a simple and easy to use application that makes all things related to book tracking understandable and low effort.

My Role
In the assignment it is stated that this is an individual project, hence I would be the sole designer for the entirety of the project. From determining the problem and goal, to designing, development and testing of the final prototype. I focused on developing an app that was so simple and user-friendly that users would want to open and interact with it.

A Good Foundation
In creating this application, I conducted several interviews and rounds of user testing to ensure that the product had a solid foundation I could build upon. Through this process I got valuable insight into what functionality the users wanted in the app, what problems or challenges they were met with, and features they did not like or felt were unnecessary. This effected the development of the prototype immensely with me adding and removing features based on the feedback to create a streamlined application that fully catered to the needs of my users.

Promotional Video
As it was required in the assignment to have a promotional video that would entice users to want to try the application I started the process of learning Adobe AfterEffects to be able to create an impressive promotional video that maybe could tempt possible users to want to download and try the application.

During this project I worked closely with users, trying to keep the focus on the goal, which was creating an app prototype that they would want to use. However, in a survey done after the last user tests only 60% of the target audience said that they would use the app if it was developed and on the marked. The users were asked why they did not want to use it and replied the same as in the initial interview that they did not see a practical use for it in their daily life.
In the next iteration it might be necessary to delve deeper into what makes these users not see a need for this app or possibly have a re-evaluation of the target audience.

In summary the project was challenging but gave me a lot of valuable insight that I would not have been able to acquire myself. In addition to this I really discovered a love for UX and UI design that I did not know I had. The project is not perfect and needs more work. The app was thereby not a total failure as it was fondly received by most of the users and answered the parameters of the brief.

Booktracking app prototype

Project Brief

Through a School project, I was given the task to create a concept that solves a real problem. The solution was to be presented through an interactive mobile app prototype developed with the end-users in mind, in addision to a promotional video.

Prosess

In creating this application, I conducted several interviews and through this prosses I got valuable insight into what functionality the users wanted in the app, what problems or challenges they were met with and features they did not like or felt were unnecessary. This effected the development of the prototype immensely with me adding and removing features based on the feed back.

Design

Based on interviews with the userbase I established multiple key words that the user’s themselves used to describe their dream version of the application. Afterwards I cross examined all the findings to try and narrow it down to three main key words that could represent most of the target demographic. The three words that most closely correlated to the feedback were clean, simple, and solid.

Promotional Video

As it was required in the assignment to have a promotional video that would incise users to want to try the Application I started the prosses of Learning after effects to be able to create an impressive promotional video that maybe could incise possible users to want to download and try the application.
